Twenty years after the events of Star Ocean, Ronixis J. Kenni and his son, Claude C. Kenni embark on a mission to investigate a planet. Claude C. Kenni, while investigating a strange machine with a mysterious energy field around it, transports young Claude to the underdeveloped planet of Expel.

Upon arrival, Claude C. Kenni meets a young girl, Rena Lanford, who is being attacked by a monster. Claude defeats the monster, and joins Rena back in her village of Arlia. Claude learns of Rena's mysterious powers, and the Sorcery Globe, a large meteorite that crashed on Expel. Claude and Rena set off to investigate the Globe, as well as discover where Rena is really from, and how to get Claude home
